Tom Lumley  |  President, CEO and Chairman of the Board

Tom, a native of Ashland, Kentucky, grew up in this city in eastern Kentucky, attending the local community college and nearby Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, while working for Armco Steel in Ashland.  He relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, completed his education at the University of Kentucky majoring in accounting.  While at the University of Kentucky, Tom was the accounting supervisor for Trane Company in Lexington.

After graduation, Tom answered Uncle Sam’s call and spent two years with the United States Army returning with the rank of Sergeant.  After the service, Tom was employed as controller for Sikes Carpet, a Division of Florida Tile in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.  In 1974, he moved to Louisville to assume the duty of vice president and partner of Robert Half Personnel, Inc.  In 1976, Tom purchased one-third interest in Murphy Manufacturing and became its executive vice president.  Murphy grew over the years to become Fire King International, the largest producer of insulated files and safes in North America.

During 1984 Tom sold his interest in Fire King and purchased Places, A Travel Agency located in Louisville, Kentucky.  Over the years, Places Travel became part of the Carlson Travel Network and was the second largest agency in Kentucky with 75 employees and sales of $26 million.  In June 1994, Places Travel merged with Woodside Travel Services and it too became part of the Carlson Travel Network.

As part of a retirement strategy, in August 2001 management developed an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) which enabled the employees to purchase 100% of the company.  Under the leadership of Tom, the ESOP guaranteed that the company would remain locally owned and operated.  Tom is currently president, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board.  In 2004, the agency made the decision to develop an identity and unique brand name that more accurately identified its forward thinking vision, practical approach to client services, and variety of offerings.  Thus, the corporate name of The Travel Authority was born.  On April 1, 2005, The Travel Authority joined the American Express Travel representative network and is the largest member to join American Express’ growing U.S. Representative Network.  Today, this travel management company has more than 300+ employees located in five states, is the 30th largest travel agency in the United States, and projects sales for 2007 to be in excess of $300 million.

During the years from 1975 to present, Tom has also been involved in several real estate interests.  He is currently president of Lumley Enterprises a real estate investment company and a partner and/or principal in several LLC’s to include single family dwellings as well as commercial real estate.  He is a licensed real estate agent in the state of Indiana.  In early 1996, Tom became involved as a Director and founder of Hometown National Bank in New Albany, Indiana.  In 2003, Hometown National was acquired by First Harrison Bank.

Tom married his wife Pam in August 1996 and gained two step-children, Chad and Amy Quinn.  Pam is currently Owner/Broker of Re/Max Results of New Albany, Indiana.  She is also Chairman of the Southern Indiana Board of Realtors.

Other activities include past president of the following organizations:

  • Dream Factory
  • Floyd County Chamber of Commerce
  • Hoosier Falls Private Industry Council
  • International Credit and Finance Association
  • Kentuckiana World Commerce Council
  • Louisville Society for Human Resource Management
  • Southern Seven Workforce Investment Board
  • Travel Agent’s Association of Kentuckiana

Tom is currently serving as president of the New Albany-Floyd County School Corporation Foundation and is a Director for One Southern Indiana (the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce).
